Let us support their efforts:
When you take a walk through Coventry City center you notice massive ground work taking place. A good number of roads have been resurfaced, few cars can now cross through the city center and pedestrians are not so sure which path they will take next time as the barriers that demarcate the progress of work change from time to time. I like walking through Coventry City. I admire the men who endure the rain and cold so as to uplift its face. Someone told me that the face lift of Coventry City center is due to the Olympic Games which it will partly host. Of course city authorities want to portray a good image of our city so that the visitors go away with a positive picture of who we are. This goal deserves the support of everyone.
It is upsetting to notice that the paving stones newly laid are already dotted with chewing gum, cigarette butts and spittle. I tell you, passing through the city can be dreadful; while you might avoid stepping on chewing gum, you might not avoid looking at the heavy spittle and cough spittle almost every few yards you walk.
My village primary school teacher in the ‘bushes’ of Uganda used to discourage us children from spitting saliva and cough irresponsibly because doing so could cause disease. I didn’t expect that there are so many people here in our city that seem not to know that. If Coventry City is to portray a good image of itself during this Olympic year, the people who come into the city, ought to check their habits some of which are truly sickening. If this is not done, visitors from other parts of the world coming for the games will, instead of talking about our cleanliness and hospitality talk about how sickening it was to be here!
